Bunny + Christmas Tree = Cute

This little oreo blizzard dwarf bunny came from Peterborough one day a few months ago. His papered name has evolved to a term of endearment. He started as Achilles, then Keeley and now Bunners. He is loved and I'm pretty sure he liked the lights on the tree. I know he has a problem keeping secrets, he chewed the paper off of some presents while he shopped for his favourite decoration.

I came home from another long day at school and found these two loving the new season of snow. They love being outside and we love watching them play just off the deck, that way we can stay warm and keep a close eye out for snow related injuries...mostly just rosy cheeks and low levels of hot chocolate, that's within my scope of practice : )

Thanksgiving weekend 2011

Each season we close shortly after the Canadian Thanksgiving holiday in October, but before we do...we have an early Halloween. Kids enjoy costume dressing, tricks and treats in the eve, pumpkin carving, hay dive for cash and a wagon ride through the park. The weather has yet to fail us in our 6 seasons. Join us for our 7th Halloween on Turkey Day 2012. Pumpkins are free and the fun is fabulous! Bring a 'new to us' camping family and your first firewood bag is free too.

Nice Tent Site

I love these two campsites. They are perfect for two couples in tents wanting electricity and drinking water at the post. Side by side, these two sites are great for one sleeping tent, one dining tent and one vehicle each. Not too far from the pool or washrooms, the wireless internet is super fast here and campfire wood is delivered as requested....or whenever Dan remembers ; )

Perfect Summer Day

I walked the park with camera in hand one day this past July (2011) and found a peaceful view. There was someone just out of view with legs up reading a book by a small smoking campfire. It seemed as though I needed to hold onto that perfect summer day so I snapped a shot to remind me how nice the summers are...while we sit in the deep of winter. I found it today (Dec 19, 2011) and it's good to see what I have to look forward to next season.

Not Such a Happy Beaver

Every year brings new adventures and sometimes the camera is handy. I am sure I shocked this beaver; he was quite cranky with me standing so close. The hissing was sending a clear message, but I found it very entertaining. I did not capture the ground slapping but if he were near the water's edge his slap would have made massive waves! We are almost 1 kilometer from open water. I think his GPS was off a little. Very cool visit.

Uncommon and So Very Awesome

I have gone back to the birds on my blog this week. This year has been remarkable for uncommon visitors. For the past week we have been watching this little fellow. They came in a small gathering of 4-6 and worked along side the black eyed junkos. These fox sparrows are currently in migration and will likely fly to the most North regions of Ontario soon. But for now, we are loving their visit. They quickly hop backward and forward to gleam the ground to find seeds and teeny tiny invertebrates. They are swift like a fox and are easily frightened with the smallest of foreign sounds, and when they take to the trees they are invisible. As campers provide me with most all my wildlife photos I did not have ability to capture this little fellow. The following photo comes from Dr. Faintich in the United States. Evening Grosbeak

Its been a good year for new species at the feeders. Last week a flock of more than 60 Common Red Polls descended and stayed for three days. Yesterday, more than 30 Evening Grosbeaks landed and stayed and shelled close to 10 pounds of sunflower seeds. It was impressive. Mary and Simon go owling every day and have success talking to what we think may be the Northern Saw-Whet Owl. Very cool adventures in the bush. The rains are coming heavy and the snow is finally leaving. I hope the Canal Operators are ready and waiting to run their systems this week! The waters will surely rise to the south of us.

Hello Everyone,

By now I am convinced that almost all our friends have better weather than we here in the bush of Algonquin. The scenery is...however, stunning. A compelling mix of chatty birds and 'Matrix" fast red squirrels. An hourly visit from newly exiled deer and owls makes for interesting conversations by the fire side. Yes, Dan is chopping fire wood for me. We had a 5 hour fire today, the kids frollicked in the icy snow and Minta the Old English Sheep Dog followed every move. The 4X4 Kubota made waves in the transient oceans between the driving range and mini golf. The kids screamed in glee as Mom waved from the fire side. The reservations are flooding in for the big five holiday weekends of 2011. Have a wonderful pre-spring season and we look forward to hosting your summer stay this season.

A Special Halloween Weekend 2010

Where do I begin? We had a fabulous time. Our 'Halloween' weekend every Canadian Thanksgiving is a blast. This year was special. The costumes, the decorated trailers, decorated campsites, the leaf dipping, the hay dive, the pumpkin carving and the wagon ride were all in line for a wonderful warm up to the real Halloween! The Trick or Treating was the best block party these goblins will see this year. Everyone participated and had spent time and I think a little extra money to make it all so special! To all of our clients, thank you. 2010 was a continuous celebration of good weather, good friends and from that we have great memories. Our closing weekend was fabulous. The park had super kids and they all enjoyed the early Hallowe'en in the bush. The costumes were great and the trick or treating was the best yet. The sites, although haunted, were welcoming and kept us laughing and visiting. I will post pictures on the 23rd of this month...our resident photographer had technical issues but is hot on the fix. Keep in touch, 2011 will be just as great.

2pm ~ Carve a pumpkin and Dip Leaves... bring your tools and some favorite leaves, we bring the pumpkins and the parrafin wax.

5pm ~ all are welcome to wagon ride in costume

6pm ~Trick or Treating in the park as the night sets in.

Also on Saturday October 9th is a Craft and Bake sale at the Dwight Community Centre between 9am and 4pm. We are supporting Huntsville high school students traveling to Kenya to build a school and assist a community. My Dad is a seasonal camper at Colassantes in Carrying Place ON, and he visits us here in Dwight frequently throughout the year. On his last visit he bought a Bistro Patio Set, hand crafted out of west coast cedar. He loves it cause its railing height, and its unique....ha ha, combined with his crazy golf cart...he is the unofficial ambassador to his park.

A common request of both provincially and privately operated campgrounds is that our traveling camper clients not move any type of wood. And although recent attention has been on the Emerald Ash Borer beetle, any type of exotic infestation begins with the movement of simple every day items. Domestic bound overseas pallets which would be an accurate mode of transportation seem far removed from our daily lives but simple crticial thinking would point out that we are surrounded by opportunity to pick up a bug, and not knowing, give it a free ride to a sustaining environment perpetuating infections.

I remember as a child losing many trees on our property to the gypsy moth. Now that I own a campground I am just shy of paranoid of a nasty re occurrence caused by something the same or different. Please....when traveling do not move any type of wood. There are more than 40 buggies on the most wanted list in Ontario! You have better chances of being the cause of an infestation than that of winning any of the potential lotteries on the market!! How do I know? I finished Michelle Boue's University Statistics class with a final mark of 86. Not to mention I had Chemistry class with a Canadian Food Inspection Agent who specialized in bug detection within Ontario. So take it from someone who cares about the greenery in her life. Do not move wood, it has nothing to do with making money off of wood bags delivered to your site...remember any reputable camping establishment will credit you the wood you did not burn while camping with them...it has everything to do with listening to the leaves dance in the wind without the sound of chain saws dominating our backyards and vacation spots. Prevention is better than Reaction to an unwanted change.

How are tree infestations spread?

The human movement of infested materials such as firewood, logs, branches, nursery stock, chips or other wood is the most common way damage has been spread. Research indicates that adult beetle can fly up to 10 km, but generally do not stray from the immediate area when it emerges.

Where have beetle infestations been found in Canada?

The movement of infested firewood or other forest products causing infection has been confirmed in the municipality of Chatham-Kent; the cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Ottawa, Hamilton and Toronto; the counties of Elgin, Essex, Huron, Lambton, Middlesex and Norfolk; the regions of Durham, Halton, Peel and York in Ontario; and Carignan and the municipalities of Chambly, Saint-Mathias-sur-Richelieu, Richelieu and Saint-Basile-le-Grand in Quebec.

Ahhh the wildlife....

We are frequently asked if we have black bears on site...the honest answer, not this year. Not in 2006, 2007 or 2008, yes in 2009...but not this season. As I understand; this years natural food sources are fruitfull for them. The black bears typically only deviate from natural food sources deep in the bush when natures bounty is not plentiful. Last year it was common place to watch them frequent nearby eateries and their deep fry grease diposals. I am happy to report the only sitings are limited to jack rabbits, red squirrels...or as my Genetics Professor would command, black squirrles with an allele issue, chipmunks, owls, toads, dragonflies, hummingbirds, wood peckers and various small entertaining non threatening species. As summer moves into full swing we enjoy the sights and sounds of nature surrounded by happy laughter of campers around the pool, playground and campfire rings. Thank you to all of our return and new camping clients for a wonderfully busy season.

July Long Weekend 2010

This is Simon and I at Plastic Welding in Belleville Ontario. This is Gramma Shay's and Poppa Bob's property and home based business. They're located on the south side of the Moira River on Hwy 62, just south of Foxboro.
It is getting close to the 143rd Birthday of my homeland. Canada Day is important to me as the history of Canada tells stories of growth, change, challenges and victories of the people who built homesteads that grew into vibrant centres from which we enjoy so many luxuries. Our region celebrates Canada Day with spectular night sky images and active afternoon activities. Huntsville Ontario comes alive with music and eats, tours and treats. Just south of us in the village of Dorset on Big Trading Bay an impressive evening of fireworks can be seen from the patio at the Fiery Grill Bar and Bistro on the waterfront. Every town in Ontario will show it's affection for it's Country, but mine will boast it's greatness from the steps of the New World Summit Centre on the shores of the Lake of Bays. Road Trip / G8 Summit

The G8 Summit has come and gone. The park was extremely quiet without incident as Dan managed it without his family. The three of us went on a road trip to see the fun things near my school, Trent U. Mommy needed some baby time since returning from her first three semesters at Trent University. The kids had a blast for the 5 days we stayed away from the World Summit. Huntsville transformed into a festival of security. All law enforcement and military were serious but very friendly and in good spirits. I am happy to report that many of them liked our Lake of Bays region enough to make their own camping reservations with us. Thanks to all the Canadian Support people who maintained a vigilant front in the name of prevention. Take care and see you soon!

Welcome May 2010

Working on pine needles and fallen trees. Clean up is fun when you have two cuties to help. Here we are on the morning coffee break with raisin toast. It should be a good weather weekend for many activities, motorcycles, canoes, hiking, swimming in the pool, playing golf on site and just hanging out around the campfire listening to good friends and nature noises not often heard in the cities that most come from. Flighty Friends

A Good Day to You! Dan is growing new greenery and I am debating on the date of removal for the once beautiful cedar trees scattered around the park; the deer have completely consumed any hope of keeping the cedar scenery! Urgh. I am home today for the first time in a couple of weeks. I am officially done my first two semesters at Trent University in the Science program. I have a conditional offer to enter the School of Nursing for this coming autumn. The grades were better than I could have imagined for a busy Mom of two, who lives with 5 horses and one dog. Thank God for the Man in that package deal. Hooray to my husband. He survived 8 months minus his wife and business partner. He did well, very well! I will need to babysit the park for the next little while for him to suck up some Harley time. Sweet times to come yet. This afternoon we have a new team of winged park users. These purple finches love our table buffet. It is difficult to see them all, the photo is lacking. There are 5 females and 1 male. Hmmmm.

First Campfire 2010

Ah....8am and warm by the first fire of the season. Our clean up has begun a whole 6 weeks early this year, the snow is saying good bye and revealing all the brown that needs some love and attention. I have one day off school and it is being well used to get the park ready for Friday April 30th. We enjoyed a quiet hour with hot coffee and some plan making for this season. The driving range fence is down so that we dont feel so confined in the common grounds of the park. I never liked the fence, it seemed to cut us off from wide open skies. We are still operating the driving range but now with windows! Its nice. More changes to come. Yes April 30 is the opening day; however there will not be potable water access at the sites until Friday May 7th at the earliest. It all depends on the full moon and overnight temperatures during the first 3 weeks of May. Keep in touch, this summer is going to be "hot"!

Wow, so its been a while since my last blog post. Its not because I had nothing to say, quite the opposite, there has been too much to say. But anyway the spring sunshine is early this year and according to Dan we could be open this week with water....for those who know the "water" story....I think its very funny. But he would still be operating the park alone...school for me isnt over until April 27th. I wont know how many more years I have left at Trent U until around June this year, but I will finish this year with 9.5 credits and need a total of 20 credits for the BScN degree that will launch my career as an RN. That new life will need to allow for my absence each season between June 27 to September 5. Not too much to ask.

Back to thoughts of the Park...this year we are geographically close the G8 / G20 World Summit. It will take place at more than one location during that window of time, but some element of it will be hosted by DeerHurst Resort, 18 kilometers west of us on Hwy. 60. We are under the impression that activity will be controlled and that travellers coming our way from the GTA or south westerly towns between June 20 and June 29 will deviate Hwy 11 north at the 117 and come north east and connect with Hwy 35 north to 60. Good news, its a nicer highway and much more scenic. Call the Park early to confirm your site for that window of time.....it might be a hub of activity.

Here is our resident foxy lady, her and her kits have taken up residency here and we are glad for it, she enjoys Dan's cooking and loves to dine at the kitchen window. After all the rain we have had in past week we are starting to see the green poke through and our energy has returned. We now tackle the renos in Mens Bathroom and the Mini golf is taking on a renewed form. The golf props are beautiful and I can't wait to see them all in action. Although the snow is 12 feet deep in the parking lot and the mini golf is absolutely not visible and you can sled off the pool roof onto a slow and steady tobboggan run, the campground is almost booked full for the May Long Weekend! Dont let that comment discourage you, we have created an additional 20 sites again this year and still have openings. We welcome all reservations and answer the telephone 7 days a week. Thanks to Todd and Martha Lucier at Northern Edge Algonquin, I am enjoying a new hobby of effective web surfing and posting. Visit Todd and Martha at http://www.northernedgealgonquin.com. I have posted links and images with Craigs List and Kijiji. I detailed information on our rentals and pointed the ads to display both the campground's website and this blogspot. These vacation rentals are great options for people that like camping without roughing it. The cabin...I say....is glorified tenting. It has cold running water and electricity and appliances, but you still need to walk through the beautiful pine trees to the 24 hour wash house for the loo and hot showers. Not a huge issue for most....unless youre potty training! The fifth wheel trailer is the "adult get-a-way"....no children and no pets, no stress. We deliver your firewood and can advise you on the finest and most unique dining experiences that you can imagine. Travel by intimate boat to a historic and near secret island cookery where they will cork any bottle of wine you decide to honour at their tables. Or visit a floating dock barely exposed beneath the waters on Walker Lake and enjoy a warm up in the company of sleeping ducks at your toes. Today I am at school. I left the campground to travel North to spend a weekend with the smart and friendly staff of Northern Edge Algonquin. Here, I learn the wave of the future....RSS Feeds and Blogging! Who would of thought that camping would invovle techie geekie things like computers. Summer is coming

This is the view I remember best, walking towards the pretty grounds at the camp office with coffee in hand. Late nights socializing with great camping visitors and early mornings in the office with music loud as I refilled the humminbird feeders just outside my windows. Maybe this year the red squirrels will allow my flowers to bloom. If not, maybe I plant gargoyles instead!
